Birmingham King

World No 1 and our local hero, Dato' Lee Chong Wei stunned tournament favourite Lin Dan 21-17, 21-17 to defend his men’s singles title in All-England Championships that ended yesterday. He in fact won for himself and Malaysia much more than simply the world’s most prestigious badminton championship.

Chong Wei, through sheer grit and hard work, overcame the psychological barrier and proved he could beat Lin Dan, not in some lesser tournament but a major one at that. He thus avenged his 2009 defeat by Lin Dan at the same stage of the tournament and also gained the undisputed right to be the World No. 1.

All of Chong Wei’s achievements are certain to give him and Malaysia a big boost in the preparations for the upcoming 2012 London Olympics, at which we are targeting at least four gold medals. An example of determination, dedication and discipline, Chong Wei must certainly inspire his teammates and our budding champions with these qualities that will earn for them and our nation more honours in the future.

Let us not fail to also recognize our doubles pair of Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong who qualified for the final at the 2011 All-England tournament with some great wins en route but ultimately lost in a close tie to the Danish pair of Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen.

We are proud of the achievements of our badminton stars of yesteryear and our champions of today. Let us hope we’ll witness even greater successes in the years ahead.

Oh.... I'm so proud to be Malaysian!!!
